Ventral greebling/detailing can be tough. I have had to combat it quite often with my past few MOCs. In retrospect, I realize that I have turned to three key pieces (excluding the half-pin): the 1x2 hinge top; the 2x2 boat stud and the 2x2 turntable top.

The latter was easy to use when the goal was to achieve something technical looking, but with FIDO I discovered that the turntable top can be made to look even better with additional pieces clipped on it. After some experimenting, I discovered that many different things fit on it. Naturally, some of these hold better than others (and some only hold when rotated a certain way), but they should all be fine under certain circumstances.

Many things that can hold a standard rod fit:
The old droid body/space control
Flippers
Minifig hands
Droid arms (on a moc)

Many pieces that can hold a technic axle fit:
Small axle piece
Bigger axle piece
Wheel
Cog

And there are also some miscellanious pieces that fit:
Piston head
End of an old-school hose
Minifig plume*
Steering wheel (on a moc)

* As seen here, there are two kinds of turntable tops. This only works with the one that has a small hole in the peg.

These are just a sample - I'm confident that many more pieces will fit on the turntable top (e.g. a technic pin). These are just some suggestions. Feel free to experiment further - it's quite an interesting piece.

This was very interesting. I didn't even know you could take those turntable tops off.

Linus, thanks for doing all this experimentation with the turntable tops. While I've used them solo before, I've always been too lazy to try attaching stuff to them myself.

This is great. I just did a bunch of underside greebs yesterday (including a few of these). May have to go back and add another. I will definately keep this in mind for the future. Thanks!

Use something with a bar width to push the turntable clip from the bottom. Things like chainsaw bodies work great.

Or just get a nail (or somethig) under the protruding stud. Works for me, anyway.

Attach a turntable bottom and push sideways. Of course that isn't always possible...

I use a knife myself. A good knife can solve a lot more problems than most people give it credit for. Trust me, I know. *crazy stare*

For as long as I can remember, NASA has been a lot like NASCAR. The science involved is quite impressive if you think about it, but as a televised event, only the crashes are worth watching.

I use a knife too. Works well for prying up the larger plates. Of course that does cause scratching/denting usually. Ah well.

the grey turntable spinner tops can be removed by turning the turntable (the2x2 plate) over and pushing up through the plate with a rod or antennae piece, thereby dislodging the grey colored spinner...

Whoa. Way to spruce up the Soren-greeb.
But regarding the steering wheel usage you linked to, how the heck did you get them off the steering wheel base? I assume they're the same steering wheels commonly used in Town cars.

This is not a signature, it's a personal statement on man's willful destruction of society!

It is quite difficult to get them off - I accidentally slaughtered two or three bases before I found a technique that worked for me. Very slowly and carefully prying the two pieces apart with a knife worked pretty well. Let me know if you find a better way.
